Calvin S. Brice

Calvin S. Brice
1845-1889

Calvin S. Brice was a lawyer from Lima, Ohio, and was elected to the United States
Senate from Ohio.. He may fairly claim the title of Ohio’s most successful railroad
promoter.

Working with an investor group, he acquired control of the Lake Erie & Western
Railroad, and other lines, not only in Ohio, but also in neighboring Illinois, Michigan and Indiana. He enriched himself while so doing.

His ambition to obtain a line through Cincinnati was hampered by George Hafer,
President of the Cincinnati, Lebanon and Northern, who proved to be a worthy adversary to Brice and blocked his plans

Brice formed the Dayton & Cincinnati Terminal Railroad, which later became the
Cincinnati Northern Railroad, acquiring the C.I&M by receivership.
