Streamlined Steam

Monty got me attached to a project he and I are working on where we’re going to try and model a streamlined Pacific passenger loco. I know I’ve probably flashed some of these photos up before, but…streamlined steam locos – they’re the best!

Of course, we’ll start with B&O #5301 which pulled the Cincinnatian – because that’s where Monty wants to start:
…and closely related is B&O #5304 named the “The Royal Blue” after the train “The Royal Blue” which it pulled:
Then a favorite of mine, the NYC J-3a Hudsons that pulled the 20th Century Limited:
…and the NYC Dreyfuss Pacific that pulled the “Mercury”:
…and similar the NYC J1E Hudson, “Commodore Vanderbilt”:
This is the first time I’ve seen this loco – a C&O class L-1 Hudson #409 (at the B&O museum – I’ve been there a couple times but don’t remember this engine):
There’s the Norfolk & Western Class J 4-8-4 #611:
Or how about Southern Railway’s PS-4 Pacific #1380 assigned to the “Washington”:
This is a color tinted photo of the UP Pacific #2906, pulled the “49er”:
The second loco assigned to pull the UP “49er” was class MT-1 4-8-2 Mountain # 7002:
…the famous “Hiawatha” being pulled by Milwaukee Class A 4-4-2 #1
Not quite as famous as the “Hiawatha” was the Milwaukee “Chippewa” being pulled by Pacific #152
I’m used to the ATSF color schemes, so it’s hard to imagine a Santa Fe loco in light blue. But, there was the “Blue Goose” Pacific #3460 which pulled the “Scout”
The black & white photo is clearer, but the color gives you an idea of the look.
How about the Frisco “Fire Fly” Pacific #1018

Another “semi-“streamlined loco for Frisco was #1066 which started life as a 4-6-2, but was rebuilt as a 4-6-4 as shown here

Here’s a Chicago & North Western Class E4 Hudson #4002:

PRR streamlined some of their K4 Pacifics. This is #3768
…and they streamlined some P6 Hudsons
…and last, the PRR Class T-1 Duplex 4-4-4-4 #6110

…and that’s only a few of streamlined steam locos!

Thx,

Kevin
