THE CINCINNATI NORTHERN LAYOUT IN THE WINTON HOUSE, FOREST PARK, OHIO

THESE ARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE WINTON HOUSE LAYOUT THAT WAS TORN DOWN IN SEPTEMBER OF 1996. TEN YEARS OF WORK TOOK THE LAYOUT THIS FAR. CAB CONTROL ALLOWED US TO OPERATE NINE TRAINS ON THE MAIN LINE SIMULTANEOUSLY. OTHER TRAINS COULD BE WORKED IN THE VARIOUS TOWNS AND YARDS ALONG THE LINE. THIS LAYOUT WAS NEVER COMPLETED. WE HAD ABOUT 200 FEET OF TRACK TO LAY AND A LOT OF SCENERY TO GO. THESE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE MADE IN AUGUST OF 1994.

  1. VIEW OF THE CINCINNATI YARDS. THERE WAS A REVERSING LOOP
    UNDER THE HOUSES. THE BEGINNINGS OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN REVERSE
    LOOP AND YARDS ARE ABOVE CINCINNATI.
  1. THE NORTH END OF THE CINCINNATI REVERSING LOOP. QUEENSGATE
    TOWER IS IN THE FOREGROUND.
  1. MAUD, THE FIRST TOWN NORTH OF CINCINNATI. HERE THE TRACK
    LOOPED OVER ITSELF TO INCREASE THE RUN AND GAIN ELEVATION.
  1. MAUD LOOKING SOUTH TOWARDS CINCINNATI. THE PASSENGER TRAIN
    IS SOUTHBOUND. THE LEADS TO A STUB END YARD LOCATED UNDER
    CINCINNATI BEGIN HERE TO THE LEFT OF THE TUNNEL PORTALS.
  1. THE INFAMOUS MAUD HILL. THIS HILL WAS USED TO TEST THE PULLING POWER OF ALL ENGINES. IF AN ENGINE COULD PULL A MINIMUM OF TEN CARS UP THIS HILL IT COULD PULL ANY HILL ON THE LAYOUT. THE TRACK TO THE LEFT WENT TO IVORYDALE BETWEEN QUEENSGATE AND CINCINNATI. THE CENTER TRACK WAS THE NORTHBOUND TRACK AND THE
    RIGHT SOUTHBOUND.

  1. THE MAIN LINE WENT DOWN THE WALL ON THE RIGHT THROUGH
    MIDDLETOWN, TURNED 180 DEGREES AND CAME BACK ON THE PENINSULA.
    TRACK WORK ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PENINSULA IS IN “WINDY CUT” THE MOST PHOTOGENIC SPOT ON THE LAYOUT. AROUND THE CURVE FROM THE CUT IS LEWISBURG.
  1. THIS IS THE SOUTH END OF WINDY CUT. THE PASSENGER TRAIN
    IS GOING SOUTH TOWARDS MIDDLETOWN AT LLOYD’S SWITCH.
  1. THE NORTH TUNNEL PORTAL AT FRANKLIN JUNCTION, SOUTH OF
    LLOYD’S SWITCH.
  1. A SOUTH BOUND FREIGHT AT WINDY CUT.
  1. THE SOUTH SIDE OF LEWISBURG. THE TRACK GOING UP THE HILL
    WAS THE OLD MAIN THAT WAS REPLACED BY THE WINDY CUT REALIGNMENT.
    LEWISBURG WAS DOUBLE TRACKED WITH A CROSSOVER TO AID IN SHUTTLING
    CARS BETWEEN TRAIN AND THEIR DESTINATIONS IN TOWN.
  1. THE TOWN OF LEWISBURG LOOKING SOUTH. THIS WAS THE MOST
    COMPLETE TOWN ON THE LAYOUT HAVING BEEN TAKEN FROM THE GLENDALE LAYOUT AND INSTALLED HERE.
  1. OVERVIEW OF THE LEWISBURG PENINSULA ON THE LEFT AND
    GREENVILLE ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT. THE TOP DECK TRACK WORK ENDED
    HERE IN A REVERSING LOOP AT BRYAN. NORTH BOUND ON THE PENINSULA IS TOWARDS THE CAMERA AND AWAY FROM THE CAMERA AT GREENVILLE.
    IN BETWEEN WAS A LONG HIDDEN HOLDING YARD CALLED HIDDEN VALLEY. THERE WAS ALSO A REVERSING LOOP BETWEEN HIDDEN VALLEY AND GREENVILLE.
  1. THE FREIGHT TRAIN AT THE RIGHT CENTER IS GOING SOUTH OUT
    OF GREENVILLE AND ENTERING A TUNNEL THAT WILL TAKE IT THROUGH HIDDEN VALLEY. THE BOTTOM TRACK IS NORTH OF GREENVILLE. THE PANEL ON THE TOP DECK IS FOR BRYAN. A POWER PLANT WITH A LOADS IN EMPTIES OUT OPERATION IS TO THE LEFT OF THE TUNNEL PORTAL.
  1. ANOTHER VIEW OF GREENVILLE. THE TRAIN IS STARTING UP THE HILL SOUTH OF GREENVILLE AND IS HEADING FOR HIDDEN VALLEY.
    THE REVERSING LOOP FOR THIS SIDE OF THE LAYOUT IS BEHIND THIS BACK DROP.
  1. GREENVILLE IS DOUBLE TRACKED WITH PLENTY OF INDUSTRIES
    TO SWITCH.
  1. THE TRAIN IS SOUTH BOUND FROM ANSONIA TO GREENVILLE. THE
    STRUCTURE NEXT TO THE TANK AND BEHIND THE TRAIN IS A POWER PLANT.
    THIS WAS A LOADS IN, EMPTIES OUT OPERATION. THE TUNNEL PORTAL
    TAKES THE SOUTH BOUND TRACKS FROM GREENVILLE IN THE HIDDEN VALLEY STAGING TRACKS AND ON TO LEWISBURG.
  1. A VIEW OF ANSONIA. TO THE RIGHT OF THE PICTURE WAS TO BE A COAL MINE WITH EMPTIES IN AND LOADS OUT. IT WAS SITUATED NEXT TO THE POWER PLANT SO THAT THE POWER PLANTS LOADS BECAME
    THE MINE LOADS. THE TRACKS ON THE FAR RIGHT WERE FOR BUILDING LOADED COAL TRAINS. THE TRACK BALLASTED WITH LIGHT COLORED BALLAST AND THE ONE OCCUPIED BY THE FREIGHT ARE THE THROUGH TRACKS. THE LEAD AT THE LEFT WENT TO THE INDUSTRIES IN ANSONIA. THE TUNNEL PORTAL UNDER THE PASSENGER TRAIN LEAD TO A PROPOSED HOLDING YARD. THE DECK BRIDGE OCCUPIED BY THE PASSENGER TRAIN
    WAS AT THE NORTH END OF VAN WERT YARD AND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL THAT WENT TO THE UPPER LEVEL AND JACKSON. THE TRUSS BRIDGE TOOK THE RAILS OUT OF A 180 DEGREE TURN AND FURTHER UP THE HILL
  1. THIS VAN WERT YARD. THE TRACKS FROM THE LEFT GO OUT TO
    ANSONIA. IN THE FOREGROUND IS THE ROUND HOUSE. A MOCK-UP OF THE COALING TOWER CAN BE SEEN IN FRONT OF THE ROUND HOUSE. THIS WAS THE DIVISION POINT ON THE RAILROAD AND WAS TO HAVE
    MAJOR REPAIR FACILITIES. THE YARD WAS ABOUT 80% COMPLETE.

VAN WERT YARD FROM THE NORTH LEAD. THE STUB END TRACKS ON THE RIGHT WERE TO BE THE SHOPS. IN THE BACKGROUND CAN BE SEEN THE ROUNDHOUSE, TURNTABLE AND COALING TOWER, THE TWO TRACKS ON THE LEFT WERE THE THROUGH TRACKS. THE TRACK ON THE HILL TO THE FAR RIGHT IS CLIMBING THE HILL TO THE UPPER LEVEL. THERE WERE FOUR DOUBLE ENDED TRACKS AND THREE STUB END TRACKS IN THE YARD.

OVER VIEW OF THE HILL NORTH OF VAN WERT YARD. THE TRAIN IS SOUTH BOUND TO VAN WERT.

TOPPING THE HILL BETWEEN VAN WERT YARD AND BRYAN. THIS TRAIN IS NORTH BOUND.

  1. AROUND THIS CURVE IS BRYAN, THE LAST TOWN MODELED. THE SCENERY ON THE UPPER LEVEL WAS STYROFOAM WHILE THE LOWER LEVEL WAS THE TRADITIONAL CARDBOARD WEB WITH HYDROCAL AND PAPER TOWELS.

BRYAN IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PHOTOGRAPH. A CANNERY IS ON THE LEFT THAT REQUIRED A SWITCH BACK TRACK TO BE SERVICED

AGAIN BRYAN IS ON THE UPPER DECK. BELOW BRYAN ON THE LOWER LEVEL IS THE POWER PLANT.

AN OVER VIEW WITH LEWISBURG ON THE RIGHT, GREENVILLE ON THE LEFT AND ON THE UPPER LEVEL JUST OF THE PHOTOGRAPH ON THE LEFT IS BRYAN.

  1. AN OVERVIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL ABOVE ANSONIA LOOKING SOUTH TOWARDS VAN WERT YARD. ON THE FAR RIGHT CAN BE SEEN THE TRUSS BRIDGE ABOVE ANSONIA. VAN WERT YARD IS IN THE MIDDLE DISTANCE. ON THE LEFT IS THE VIEW BLOCK AT MAUD AT THE SOUTH END OF THE LAYOUT. IN THE BACKGROUND CAN BE SEEN THE BEGINNING BENCHWORK FOR THE JACKSON LOOP.
